Set inside the dramatic vaulted interior of the former St Mark’s Church on Shields Road, Newcastle Climbing Centre delivers a distinct vertical challenge in Byker. The centre features over 1,200 square metres of climbing surfaces, spanning top-rope lines, lead walls stretching into the timber rafters, auto-belays, and a dedicated bouldering mezzanine. Route setters rotate problems frequently, providing graded challenges from introductory F4 slabs through to demanding 8a testpieces. The atmosphere is warm and driven by Newcastle’s local climbing community, where climbers share beta beneath original stone archways. Off the wall, a dedicated training zone includes campus boards and fingerboards to build contact strength. Booking entry slots, taster courses, and coaching sessions is managed smoothly online, while competent independent climbers can register and drop in directly.
